There’s no disputing that a visit to China is a great opportunity to savour some mouth-watering delicacies. But how special would it be if you could actually learn the secrets of cooking like a local? Imagine how impressed your friends and family will be when you sit them down to some traditional Chinese favourites. LetsdoChina.com are always looking for ways to add value and creativity to your China experience and our cooking classes have become a very popular option. Whether it’s Duck in Beijing, Dim Sum in Hong Kong or Dumplings in Shanghai, you’ll have a wonderful time learning new skills and sampling some fantastic creations. Whether you’re an inexperienced novice or a chef in the making, cooking classes in China are suitable for everyone. There are several schools to choose from, each specialising in dishes that are local to their province.
One of our favourite venues is the Yangshuo Cooking School in China’s southern Guangxi province where you can master local specialties such as beer fish and steamed stuffed vegetables. The Yangshuo Cooking School operates out of two distinctly different locations offering classes every day of the week. The original is a country farmhouse setting on rural pastures surrounded by limestone mountains, while the other is located on the fabulous Li River. Classes usually begin with a trip to the nearby markets for an interesting tour and purchase of some fresh local produce. The classes maintain a very relaxed and pleasant environment and are relatively inexpensive. To reach Yangshuo, you can travel from Guilin by road or via a cruise along the very picturesque Li River. We’re so impressed by this school that we have written it into our Classic Cities Discovery and China Ultima tours.
Other schools in other provinces are available and can be arranged in conjunction with your travel arrangements. Between Hong Kong, Yangshuo, Chengdu, Shanghai and Beijing you have an excellent opportunity to learn some specialty dishes and pick up some great Chinese cooking tips. Some schools may require a minimum number of participants. If you’d like to incorporate cooking classes in any of our China tours, please select the Cooking Class option when you fill in our Enquiry Form.
